state parks project, part 17: o'bannon woods

After our adventures in retracing the steps of Honest Abe, we headed to O'Bannon Woods State Park near Corydon. We stopped along the way and picked up some subs, so the first order of business was to find a good place to eat. I think we succeeded pretty admirably on that score.

After lunch, we decided that we wanted to tackle a rugged trail that ran along the Ohio River. The trail was at the far end of the park, so we set off, and we were almost there when we ran into our first obstacle.

OK, sure. We saw a bunch of construction vehicles, but the road itself looked fine, so we parked and decided we would try to get to the trailhead on foot. We walked about three-quarters of a mile and were *so close* ... when we discovered that the workers were shoring up a cliff face along the road, and it was totally impassible. Oops. Back to the car we went. On the bright side, it was a really pretty walk with lots of interesting things to see along the way.

And then it was on to plan B: a moderate trail with some steep inclines that ran along a dry creek bed. We didn't end up completing the whole trail because by that time we (especially ME) were all running out of steam, so instead we just took some time to explore the creek bed and just enjoy the fall afternoon.

Given these limitations, we have to score O'Bannon Woods as incomplete. We really liked the areas we got to explore, but we were bummed that we didn't get to hike along the river. But never fear, we've got a plan for that. Stay tuned.
